Married Couples Tax Plans

3.37.00pm GMT Wed 20th Jan 2010

Nigel Jones, the Liberal Democrat Parliamentary Candidate For Newcastle, says

"The Conservative's plan to give tax breaks to married couples is flawed. It only gives it where one is working and the other not (which is fine for wealthy people where only one person in the house needs to work). Also, if one spouse dies, then the tax break is removed.

I share the concern to strengthen the institution of marriage, but bribing people to be married is not the most effective way. It is often claimed that because two people living separately sometimes pay less tax than if they are a couple then that is unfair; this needs addressing, though on the other side of the argument, living separately can incur other extra costs.

It all shows that the Tories are hastily cooking up policy to try to win votes."
